On October 19th 2020 the Ladies European Tour announced that the 2023 Solheim Cup, (the men´s equivalent is the Ryder Cup), will be played at Finca Cortesin, Casares Costa, in the very heart of the Costa del Sol. This prestigious international tournament will be played in Spain for the first time, taking place from September 18 to 24 2023
There will be 3 days of build up play and a junior tournament. The main event will pit Team Europe against Team USA in a match play format in one of the world’s greatest sporting events.
Finca Cortesin itself is a world renowned elite golfing destination. It has recently featured in 3 Volvo World Matchplay events and is regularly listed as one of the Europe’s Top 5 courses by both Golf World and Golf Digest.
The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, said that “it is an event that will go beyond sport,” adding, ”we will have the opportunity to showcase what we have to offer, which ranges from our excellent climate, to our hotels, our organisational capacity, our gastronomy, our leisure and also our culture.”
The President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), Gonzaga Escauriaza. highlighted the importance of golf as an engine of economic recovery at a delicate time for Spain saying “Hosting the Solheim Cup in our country is great news both for the sport of golf and for Spanish society as a whole. Once again we will have the opportunity to show the world the excellence of our golf facilities and all that goes with them. The announcement comes at a perfect time as it gives us the opportunity to help accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector. Let’s work and enjoy this spectacular sporting event.”
